🌌 GetUrBook Review: Arc of the Universe by Nikki Alexander – Justice, Identity & Building a New World
Sometimes a book doesn’t just tell a story—it makes you pause, reflect, and question the very systems we live in. Arc of the Universe by Nikki Alexander is one such rare read.
Set in a near-future 2032, this thought-provoking novel follows Carrie Davenport, a Black constitutional law professor from North Carolina, who’s asked to do something most of us can only dream about—write the first constitution for a human colony on Mars. But here’s the catch: she’s barely recovered from a deeply traumatic incident with the police back on Earth. An incident that pushed her into the national spotlight… and forced her to confront her own belief in justice and governance.
What I loved most about this book is how Carrie’s fight for justice feels both intimate and universal. Nikki Alexander doesn’t hold back when describing Carrie’s raw pain, confusion, and anger after the assault. Yet the story never turns her into a passive victim. Instead, we see her gather strength, engage in public debates, and ask hard questions about democracy, law, and who they truly serve.
There’s also something beautifully human about Carrie’s internal struggle with identity. She’s not just building laws for a distant planet—she’s also rebuilding her sense of self. The way she navigates her identity, her trauma, and her growing relationship with another woman adds layers of vulnerability and hope.
At its heart, Arc of the Universe explores a powerful question:
Can we build a better world when we haven’t yet healed the wounds of this one?
This book blends social commentary, emotional storytelling, and just enough near-future sci-fi to keep you thinking long after the last page.
📚 Quick Verdict:
If you love books that blend activism, identity, politics, and heart, this one deserves a place on your shelf. Perfect for fans of social justice fiction and speculative thought experiments.
